In September we celebrated 100 years! So many lives have been touched by the wonderful services provided by our facility! We appreciate everyone that has ever worked with, volunteered for, and supported Whitten Center in any way!

I enjoy working with these residents because I feel like I make a difference in their lives. Their smiles show me I’ve done my job for the day!

Whitten Center is a residential facility of the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (SCDDSN). Its purpose is to assist individuals with disabilities and their families in meeting needs, pursuing possibilities, and achieving life goals by:

  • Addressing individual needs

  • Encouraging choice

  • Promoting growth in skills and abilities

  • Facilitating social interaction and community involvement

This is done in a setting with a wide range of services that encourages personal independence balanced with the need to provide a safe, secure, and supportive environment.

I have been working at Whitten Center for 38 years. I am eligible for retirement, but I choose to continue to work. I love these residents because they put a smile on my face everyday!

Life Skills Training

All individuals receive training each day in areas determined to be appropriate by the individual and his or her interdisciplinary team. The training provided may be centered on activities of daily living, prevocational needs, vocational activities, or a combination of each. The services are provided in residential units, classrooms, and workshop areas. Our therapy staff members assist with these services through the provision of adaptive devices and equipment, as needed, to maximize each individual’s abilities.

Recreation Services

The recreation staff provides a variety of activities year-round, both on grounds and off campus. Highlights include a Spring Dance and participation in Special Olympics on local, state, and national levels. Shopping trips, dinner outings, and opportunities to take part in community events are also greatly enjoyed!

These residents give me LOTS of love! I think of my “friends” as family. They give me much more than I give them, and I learn from them every day.

Health Services

Whitten Center has a talented and caring team of doctors, nurses, psychology staff, a dietician, a dentist, and a chaplain. Therapy services are provided that include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. They all work together and with contracted and local health care providers to ensure that the highest quality of healthcare is provided.

Residential Services

Devoted residential staff are vital to providing a safe and caring homelike environment. These workers are with the residents throughout daily activities to offer care and assistance and provide ongoing training. They seek to appreciate and celebrate the uniqueness of each resident, as they are encouraged to reach their highest levels of independence.
